How are you creative?
Joan Dalton, in her book Adventures in Thinking describes different dimensions of creativity.
I find this fascinating.
For so many people, creativity is art or music. I hear, often, “But I’m not creative!”
Joan Dalton’s work helped me recognise my own creativity. I’m not an original thinker. But I am very good at collecting ideas, stitching them together with a bit of my own filling, and creating something that works for me and for others.
Fluency (coming up with lots of different ideas), flexibility (coming up with different applications), elaboration (adding detail), complexity (seeing the context), risk taking, curiosity and imagination are as important as originality.
Creativity can be explored and developed. I, personally, find that I can be more creative when I am working with others. Somehow, ideas seem to flow better. I am inspired by others’ ideas and work. I feel grateful for other’s support. I feel more confident.
